With\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ottens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the whole world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0has been<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0able to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">play<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0music in a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0completely different<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0way and record it in a more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">convenient<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and simple way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Dutch-born engineer joined the Dutch technology company Philips in 1952 and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a few years later\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was promoted to head of research and development<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0department<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Here, guiding and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">engaging<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the members of his team, he started the study and research for the creation of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">world\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">first portable recorder. A few years later, in 1963, the first plastic cassette<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0tape<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">created\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ottens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0was presented at the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Internationale\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Funkausstellung<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the technology fair held in Berlin. The launch of the revolutionary new device was followed by the slogan \u201csmaller than a pack of cigarettes\u201d. Since then, more than 100 billion units have been sold\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">worldwide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
