In the past, many scientists have looked for an effective method to monitor seismicity through those cables and today, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), together with some optics experts\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Google, have created a way to detect earthquakes thanks to cables in optic fib<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The study published by the institute has shown that submarine fib<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0optic cables are sensitive to wave pressure and temperature variations that can be linked to external events and therefore are useful for the study of earthquakes and for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">analysing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ocean floor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This new technique can really convert the majority of submarine cables into geophysical sensors that are thousands of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">kilometers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0long to detect earthquakes and possibly tsunamis in the future<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We believe this is the first solution for monitoring seismicity on the ocean floor that could feasibly be implemented around the world. It could complement the existing network of ground-based seismometers and tsunami-monitoring buoys to make the detection of submarine earthquakes and tsunamis much faster in many cases<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0said\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zhongwen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Zhan, assistant professor of geophysics at Caltech.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The study was mainly based on the monitoring of Google&#8217;s Curie submarine cable, about 10,000 kilomet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s long<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0connect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the Californian city of Los Angeles to Valpara\u00edso in Chile.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The cable, with a diameter of two centimetres, is located\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at a depth between<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0four and six kilomet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s and contains four optical fibr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s.
